Shrek the Third

Date: May 23
Location: Muvico Boynton Beach

Well, here's a movie that makes Spider-Man 3 look like, um, Spider-Man 2. As somebody who very much enjoyed the first two Shrek films, I have no idea how this garbage made it to the big screen. The plot was weak, the characters bland and the humor non-existent. I think I laughed twice. I saw it with Sophia on an otherwise lovely evening -- meaning this film puts to rest Dana's theory about the moviegoing experience. Meet the Robinsons was Citizen Kane compared to this dreck.

My theory is not put to rest!!! It lives, and lives well!!! First, did Sophia like it?:) Second, I doubt Sophia expressed extreme love of the movie even if she generally enjoyed it. Third, my theory really operates on the premise that Clay at times has a more extreme than normal reaction, one way or the other, to a film based, in part, upon Alex's reaction. Thus, an entirely pleasant and genreally Innocuous movie like Greek Wedding, which even if not reviewed univesally as great was rarely panned as utter garbage, becomes a heap of crap in Clay's view--reinforced by Alex's reaction. Conversely, films like XMen2 or Matrix2, which were okay to good (not just my opinion but that of most critics) get a bump up in the rankings because of Alex's extreme positive reaction. As for Shrek IIi, the film has been almost universally panned (the best reviews are still mediocre for the most part). So, it is harldy surprising that Clay would find the film to be crap. I will concede that my theory MIGHT take a hit if Sophia was completely wild about the film and Clay still stuck Shrek at the bottom of his list, but I'm guessing that's not the case as Sophia's movie taste is rather sophisticated:)

First, I liked Greek Wedding far less than Alex upon first viewing. If anything, you could argue her reaction became more harsh in reaction to mine. X-Men 2 is at 87% on the TomatoMeter. It is widely regarded as right up there with Spider-Man 2 as one of the best movies of its kind. I'd rank it right below Spidey 2 as well. So I think you're off in saying your opinion of that film is closer than mine to the critical consensus. Finally, Sophia says she liked Shrek the Third a lot, though I didn't hear her laughing much. It was cute... she was upset when I said I didn't like it as much as the others, as if it's somehow not right to speak ill of a movie.
